Ogatan Charcoal is natural, Vietnamese-style log charcoal from your friends at Knifewear. It is made sustainably from orchard-grown fruitwood offcuts. Ogatan Charcoal delivers a consistent, even heat, that is easy to cook with, and imparts a mild flavour on your BBQ'ed food.

Knifewear's Ogatan Charcoal is a great alternative to Japanese binchotan charcoal, or an excellent way to get the most from your Binchotan. Light a few pieces of Knifewear charcoal, then use them to light your binchotan more easily. If you're cooking for a large group, cut your binchotan 50/50 with Ogatan to get the best bang for your buck!

  • Carbon Content: 90%
  • Burn Time: 2-3 hours
  • No flame and very little smoke.
  • Compressed sawdust from fruitwood (trim and dead wood from orchards).
  • Comes in a 5.5lb / 2.5kg box.
  • Made in Vietnam.

TIPS FOR STARTING:

  • Place your binchotan on a bed of already lit softer charcoal like the ogatan or even lump charcoal if you have it.
  • Make sure that your coal is neatly placed in the chimney starter, all running in the same direction, and place the whole thing on a propane burner for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Use a hair dryer, fan, or shop-vac to blow air on the coals like a blacksmith’s bellows.

Due to international shipping regulations, we cannot send charcoal to customers outside of Canada. We apologize for the inconvenience.

"Burns for a long time, improving the length of time you can cook."

Lee D. (5/5)

Great charcoal

"Great charcoal we use for catering. Much more accessible than binchotan and substantially superior to traditional store bought hardwood charcoal. Takes a bit longer to get going but well worth it!"

Rony S. (5/5)

Great value

"I mix it up and you can always quench in water and use it next time."

Eugene W. (5/5)

Excellent dense reusable charcoal

"Good sized logs of charcoal with minimal dust in the packaging. Relatively easy to light using a chimney starter. These burn with minimal smoke and high heat, and leave little ash behind. Can be reused after being extinguished."

Eric L. (5/5)

Ogatan Charcoal

"together with the hibachi I had purchased from Knifewear a while back. We are able now to grill or BBQ anything and turn out beautiful food! I love the friendly staff and always knowledgeable and happy to help."

Great value for quality

"I’ve use the Shirozumi Eucalyptus Charcoal with the Konro and was told this would be a good option as well. It has been a great addition to grilling season."

Q&A

What is the dimension of the charcoal itself? Need to determine and see if the height laying flat would not be too high for my grill.
Hey, Matt. Thanks for the question. The charcoal itself is on average 2x2.5 inches. Let us know if we can help with something else.
How many pieces to fit a medium yakitori konro?
8 or so should fit in a single layer, laying flat on the bottom. We have a great video by Owen about using your grill that you can check out here https://knifewear.mom/blogs/articles/how-to-use-your-konro-grill
Can these be reused by putting them out like binchotan?
Absolutely they can! But being less dense than traditional Bincho, you won't get as many quench/reuses.
