This basic care information will help you maximize the performance and life of your natural stone.

  • Use plenty of water this will act as a lubricant, preventing damaging the knife or the stone.
  • Never ever use oil it will ruin your stone.
  • DO NOT soak this stone.
  • Do not keep stones in direct sunlight, extreme heat or cold (i.e. Inside of a car in winter). Please wipe excess water off from the stone before storing.
  • Get a truing stone. This will help you to maintain right angle for sharpening, and will give you the best result. The flatter the stones are, the sharper knives get!
  • Do not use on a full moon or in a forest, next to a large tree.

Amakusa Natural Stone

"I like this "Natural stone" , just little bit surprisingly heavy. It is beautiful."

Jessica S. (5/5)

A must buy if you love traditional Japanese knife maintenance

"Not what I expected at all. I was looking for a fairly coarse natural stone. But this stone actually gets pretty fine on bevel work. It works pretty fast as long as the metal isn’t too hard. And works great to remove scratches from grinding work and ease your way into finer natural stones. After testing, I realized I drastically underestimated these stones."

Austin T. (5/5)

A GREAT stone for the cost. Sharpens quickly and easily.

"Wonderful grit and great tactile feedback. I found every knife I tried was easy to sharpen a knife quickly on this beauty! Note that it is a soft stone and will need to be flatten frequently. Get one.... for the price, this cannot be beat."

Patrick B. (5/5)

Great Stone.

"This Amakusa/Binsui is a bit more coarse than the other ones available, but the one I got has some gorgeous layering. It's super versatile, though a bit slower than other Binsui grit stones. Still, it doesn't scratch as deep, and is great for a base polish or sharpening. Very pleased!"

Good product, shipping was prompt

"Good product, shipping was prompt with no issues. Stones were neatly packed"

Damaso L. (4/5)

Value

"If you cut large volumes daily, this is great for routine maintenance as a first step in a sharpening progression. If need be, you can get a nice toothy edge just off this anyhow. This thing is so big it’s going to last forever."

Inexpensive Introduction to an Excellent Class of Sharpening Tools

"While the pitted surface of these stones leaves tiny teeth on knife edges, these can be an asset in cutting meats and dense vegetables, and they will continue to sharpen a bit longer than ceramic stones of similar hardness. The low price is irresistible."

Thomas P. (4/5)

It's the best value in

"It's the best value in a stone you can get. Period."

Amakusa Red

"Great stone and very heavy. Huge stone with tons of life to it. I expected it to be an 800 grit stone but it sharpens closed to 1k or 1200. It’s a little slower than I thought but I’m good with that. The stone will literally last forever it’s crazy how slow it wears. Needed slight lapping to flatten but other than that especially for the price it can’t be beaten. The shipping was incredibly quick too!"

Q&A

Which side of the stone is recommended to use for sharpening? I originally started with the 70mm dimension but upon second thought it seems the 60mm dimension side was intended to be used because it was lapped smooth whereas the wider side had rough saw marks on it suggesting it would be the side of the stone. This runs counter to most synthetic stones so I want to make sure I'm using it appropriately.
The sharpening side is skinnier (60mm) side!
Hello! I want to dip my toes into natural stones, and this looks like an affordable piece to start with. A couple questions; Is this something that I’d need to lacquer the sides (I’ve seen that’s a “thing”, and have no idea what/how/why), and is a natural nagura needed for this, or do synthetics work? Cheers!
As with all things natural stone - the answers are grey, not black and white. A natural nagura will work better but a synthetic one will function. I've even used this specific stone without a nagura slurry with adequate though not perfect results. I've never lacquered the sides, I believe this is to keep them from absorbing extra water, keep the sides in tact, remind you to use the top, etc. It may be best practice but is often overkill. This stone is a great intro to natural stones with its relatively accessible price point. It is a little coarser than most would use for a finishing stone. It's perfect for building a finish on a bevel or a slightly toothy edge but won't give you a shining polished finish of some of the finer stones. It's a great addition and start to a natural stone collection though! - Connor
Why is there no general descriptions of the natural stones or hardness/ fineness values ? For those not in the know .
Good question! We've just not got around to getting descriptions on everything! This stone is 800-1000 grit. Being a natural stone, it isn't as exact as a manufactured stone.
