This is the stone that will give you true shaving nirvana. An edge properly honed to this grit will sing through the hair, leaving only glory in its wake. The stone is incredibly hard and hones quite slowly, so it is usually best to start on a rougher stone. Some folks will mostly use a a finishing stone only, and tune their edge up more regularly.

Naniwa Specialty stones are softer than some, so they require more careful and frequent flattening. They're a great budget-friendly option and will last a lifetime of casual sharpening.

Always flatten your stone with a truing stone after honing.

Sharpening knives can be one of the most satisfying and fun skills to learn and do. Whether you’re an old hand at sharpening, or just starting out, we want to give you a few tips to help you get the most out of your water stones. If you have any questions about care or technique, please feel free to get in touch, our contact information is below.

Waterstone tips:

  • Use plenty of water. Periodically splash your stones with water as you use them to prevent the stone from plugging up with residue.
  • Some stones require soaking in water for about 20 minutes prior to use, others only require a splash of water while sharpening. Knifewear brand stones tell you what they require on the package. A good way to tell which a stone requires is to splash it with water, if the stone immediately sucks up all the water on it, soak it. If it
pools on top don’t soak it.
  • Stones take on steel residue with use. A small Nagura stone can help clean the surface like an eraser.
  • Use a truing stone to keep the stone surface flat. Softer stones might require this before every sharpening session. This will help you to maintain the correct angle for sharpening, which is critical for creating the best knife edge.
  • We suggest lightly beveling the edges of the stone with a truing stone to avoid cutting yourself, and to prevent chips from coming off.
  • In dry climates, certain stones can be vulnerable to cracking if they dry too quickly. To avoid this, wrap these stones in a damp tea towel and allow to dry more slowly. These include the Knifewear 4000 and 8000, as well as the Naniwa Professional series.

Important!

  • Do not keep stones in direct sunlight, extreme heat or cold
(e.g. Inside a car in winter) and avoid dropping them.
  • Always wipe excess water off from the stone before storing.
  • Never ever use oil on a water stone. It will ruin it.
  • Have fun!

Excellent finish

"I have used it on different japanese knives after the 8000 grit stone. I’m not sure it adds to the sharpness but it surely gives a mirror finish to the edge."

Naniwa 12_000 for razor

"I found the Naniwa 12_000 to noticeably improve a razor's edge. It has served as a finishing stone before moving to a CrOx hanging linen strop. Alternatively, it has served as the last synthetic before moving to a natural stone. I'm jumping from an 8k Rockstar to the Naniwa. It seems to be a reasonable leap with no issues thus far. However, since it is a soft stone, I tend to a lap it a fair bit before/during/after use. Glad I made the decision to pickup the Naniwa 12_000, i. e. The Honda Civic of finishing stones for razors. For this stone, Knifewear provided very competitive pricing. Furthermore, their staff were very helpful."

Jean B. (5/5)

Its a solid sharpening stone

"Very good tool for finishing ur knife edge"

Andy L. (5/5)

The finisher

"A very user friendly splash and go no nonsense stone. I was able to put a fine mirror finish on my straight razor on the 12k. Naniwa has simplified and taken the guesswork out of straight razor honing for me with its line of Specialty/Super stones."

Graham M. (5/5)

12k naniwa super stone

"Great for honing my straight razors. 50 passes a side, and they were ready for stropping."

Zak L. (5/5)

Amazing Quality

"Haven’t had the opportunity to use it yet but I can tell from the quality it will be a great final stone for my straight razor."

Ian S. (5/5)

Although I haven't had to

"Although I haven't had to use it much, from the little work I have used it on it's been a solid stone producing the kind of results I would expect."
