The Naniwa Professional 400 grit stone is hardcore. It eats up steel so fast that it makes serious repairs & bevel-setting a dream. Naniwa Professional stones are harder than most, so they stay flat better and last much longer than cheaper options.

When to use this stone:

  • Cuts steel quickly and no soaking is required, just splash and go.
  • Sets a good flat foundation for any knife thinning you are doing and takes out deep stratches very quickly, priming your knife for finer stones.
  • Works great for touch-ups on rugged outdoor knives.
  • Due to its hardness, it is by far the longest-lasting low grit stone available and will need much less truing than other low grit stones.

That said, always flatten your stone with a truing stone after sharpening.

Sharpening knives can be one of the most satisfying and fun skills to learn and do. Whether you’re an old hand at sharpening, or just starting out, we want to give you a few tips to help you get the most out of your water stones. If you have any questions about care or technique, please feel free to get in touch, our contact information is below.

Waterstone tips:

  • Use plenty of water. Periodically splash your stones with water as you use them to prevent the stone from plugging up with residue.
  • Some stones require soaking in water for about 20 minutes prior to use, others only require a splash of water while sharpening. Knifewear brand stones tell you what they require on the package. A good way to tell which a stone requires is to splash it with water, if the stone immediately sucks up all the water on it, soak it. If it
pools on top don’t soak it.
  • Stones take on steel residue with use. A small Nagura stone can help clean the surface like an eraser.
  • Use a truing stone to keep the stone surface flat. Softer stones might require this before every sharpening session. This will help you to maintain the correct angle for sharpening, which is critical for creating the best knife edge.
  • We suggest lightly beveling the edges of the stone with a truing stone to avoid cutting yourself, and to prevent chips from coming off.
  • In dry climates, certain stones can be vulnerable to cracking if they dry too quickly. To avoid this, wrap these stones in a damp tea towel and allow to dry more slowly. These include the Knifewear 4000 and 8000, as well as the Naniwa Professional series.

Important!

  • Do not keep stones in direct sunlight, extreme heat or cold
(e.g. Inside a car in winter) and avoid dropping them.
  • Always wipe excess water off from the stone before storing.
  • Never ever use oil on a water stone. It will ruin it.
  • Have fun!

Worth it

"Best stone on the market for repairs"

Stephen M. (5/5)

Great stone

"This is a great quality stone and is ideal to start your sharpening before moving on to 4000 or 1000."

David H. (5/5)

Excellent Stone

"I bought this as an in between stone when thinning and it has been really great for taking out the larger scratches and has sped up my process a lot. I also use it to start sharpening the koba of a dull knife too. I find the feedback is great, it develops a burr quickly."

Robert M. (5/5)

Great first stone to get into sharpening!

"This is my second time buying this stone, it's for a portable sharpening kit to keep in my vehicle along with a Naniwa Pro 1000 stone. This is splash and go, so you are sharpening right away, not waiting for the stone to soak. While there may not be as much feedback as a soaker, there is also no prep time, and no waiting for the stone to dry after use. This sharpens very quickly and you can get a serviceable edge on most knives without having to go any further, just adjust your pressure as needed. I always get my knives sharp on the first stone. Anything further is just edge refinement and polishing. For portable sharpening, you can find bins at the dollar-stores, along with a silicone sink tray to hold the stone. I added a piece of leather and a microfiber cloth for a truly portable sharpening kit. All of my stones and many of my knives have been purchased from Knifewear, they have always looked after me as a customer!"

Gorgeous knife!

"Love this knife for small jobs. It's so pretty, too!"

Stone Good

"Very nice stone, especially for very dull/damaged blades. I fixed a few of my in-laws blades while over for the holidays and they couldn't believe that I was able to salvage and make sharp one blade in particular."

Samantha Y. (5/5)

The stone gives a good

"The stone gives a good and consistent result I am happy with."

400

"Pretty much the grand-daddy of all stones. This is your base-camp for climbing to the sharpest peaks in the world. It’s fast and durable and pretty much all you need for a sub-1000 grit in your collection for sharpening (other than maybe the KW 220 if you’re prone to chipping your knives). Get it!"

Jackson C. (5/5)

naniwa professional 400

"So far so good. This stone seems quite hard and stays flat longer than my knifewear 220. Also leaves smaller scratches. It cuts a bit slower than the knifewear 220 and Sharpton glass 220, but seems to be a good starting stone for a dull carbon steel knife's Koba, as it's almost as fast and there's less work to get rid of the scratches after stepping up. For thinning it's pretty slow compared to either 220 stone, and the scratches are comparable to the Sharpton glass 220."
