Each Bread Lame is unique and the wood colour will vary from piece to piece.

The bread lame is an essential tool for sourdough bread baking. This tool is used by professional and amateur bakers alike to hold a razor blade, which slashes the top of your sourdough bread to create intricate decorative designs that reveal themselves as the loaf bakes. The lame makes the blade easy to manipulate, which protects your hands from the sharp edges. Most professional bakers prefer shorter lame held in the palm top to afford greater control over the blade.

About Wire Monkey - Wire Monkey was started in 2018 when a man named Tyler crafted his first lame to support his wife's sourdough obsession and replace her prison shank-esque lame made from a stir stick and a razor blade. The resulting minimalist design was small and easy to use, and right in line with what professional bakers prefer. The business has since grown; they pay a living wage, and use no plastic or harsh chemicals.

Not for us

"I wanted to like this, but I found it a little difficult. We tend to clean off our blade after each use, which we found makes this product add a lot of effort to do well. I also found the blade storage inside the ufo to be useful but in practice, to get the lame tight and the blade out requires a little too much pressure and if you're not being careful could be a point to get knicked by the blade while tightening. Overall, I can see why people might enjoy this product, but it's not for me."

So Clever

Very Versatile

"The shape allows multiple gripping positions which helps when scoring intricate designs on irregular loaves. It also looks great and sticks on a fridge or knife magnet."

Nothing lame about this fun tool

"Cute as hell and it perfectly fits a blade inside. Could I use a coffee stirrer instead? Sure but this is more fun"
