When you are looking to take a knife and turn it into a high-powered cutting laser, you should consider this stone. Unfortunately, lightsabers aren’t real but this will make a piece of steel feel as sharp. Used near the end of your sharpening routine, this stone will polish your edge to a near-razor state. Ripe tomatoes, you have been warned!

Always flatten your stone with a truing stone after sharpening.

When to use this stone:

  • Will need a Progression from a medium grit stone but leaves a good standard of sharpness.
  • Not great for knife thinning, but possible
  • Probably the best touch up or polishing stone for Japanese stainless steels
  • Works really well for any stainless steel 63 HRC or above.

About Naniwa - Naniwa is the biggest and best sharpening stone manufacturer in Japan. Their stones are among some of the highest quality in the world, good for both professional and amateur. They make a wide range of grits and densities, so you can choose the perfect stone for your needs and budget.

Sharpening knives can be one of the most satisfying and fun skills to learn and do. Whether you’re an old hand at sharpening, or just starting out, we want to give you a few tips to help you get the most out of your water stones. If you have any questions about care or technique, please feel free to get in touch, our contact information is below.

Waterstone tips:

  • Use plenty of water. Periodically splash your stones with water as you use them to prevent the stone from plugging up with residue.
  • Some stones require soaking in water for about 20 minutes prior to use, others only require a splash of water while sharpening. Knifewear brand stones tell you what they require on the package. A good way to tell which a stone requires is to splash it with water, if the stone immediately sucks up all the water on it, soak it. If it
pools on top don’t soak it.
  • Stones take on steel residue with use. A small Nagura stone can help clean the surface like an eraser.
  • Use a truing stone to keep the stone surface flat. Softer stones might require this before every sharpening session. This will help you to maintain the correct angle for sharpening, which is critical for creating the best knife edge.
  • We suggest lightly beveling the edges of the stone with a truing stone to avoid cutting yourself, and to prevent chips from coming off.
  • In dry climates, certain stones can be vulnerable to cracking if they dry too quickly. To avoid this, wrap these stones in a damp tea towel and allow to dry more slowly. These include the Knifewear 4000 and 8000, as well as the Naniwa Professional series.

Important!

  • Do not keep stones in direct sunlight, extreme heat or cold
(e.g. Inside a car in winter) and avoid dropping them.
  • Always wipe excess water off from the stone before storing.
  • Never ever use oil on a water stone. It will ruin it.
  • Have fun!

Excellent over all!

"The service offered by KW is exemplary! Their knowledge and passion for their craft is refreshing compared to most retail. Having said that I purchased a naniwa pro 5k and only two weeks later it presents micro fractures, mini-cracks, crazing, whatever you want to call it. Considering my care for this stone was adequate, my other 12 stones have never had this issue. The 1k and 3k of the same line purchased by a friend presented the exact same problem. The stone aside from the cracks is amazing! It's almost frictionless and presents a Polish I'd never thought I'd see at 5k. I'd like to see these stones without the fissures, but I can't recommend KW as a retailer enough."

A Step Up from an old 4000 Grit

"My old stone had been worn down, chipped and then dropped off a table edge. I let the sales rep at Knifewear know that I was using it for Japanese knives as well as straight razors. They recommended this stone because the professional stones are a bit harder and would stand-up to the carbon steel I was sharpening. Their advice was excellent and brought my sharpening up a level."

Tom L. (5/5)

I was in need of

"I was in need of a hard stone that would last and was comparable to the quality of the natural stone I'd been using for years (but was dropped in a devastating kitchen incident). I am more than pleased with its durability, hardness and removal rate. I bought it based on the advice of the folks at knifewear and it has exceeded expectations."

Needed? I don’t know

"Good stone for the next to nothing that I know. I probably should have just got the 600 and 2000 though rather than all 3...oh well"

Ciaran B. (5/5)

High quality stone - easy to use

"This stone is great. Splash and go makes it super easy to work with, and knives feel great against this stone - super smooth, with noticeable feedback and difference in feel as the edge sharpens."

Alan C. (5/5)

Fantastic stone

"As a part of my first set of stones, it performed exactly as I wished. Splash-and go. Great finish."
