The Naniwa Professional 800 grit stone is the ultimate for flattening out your bevel after thinning it on a softer stone, and for finishing butchery knives, hunting knives, pocket knives, and anything that needs a toothy, strong edge. Naniwa Professional stones are harder than most, so they stay flat better and last much longer than cheaper options.

When to use this stone:

  • Cuts steel quickly and no soaking is required, just splash and go.
  • Sets a good flat foundation for any knife polishing you are doing and takes out deep stratches very quickly, priming your knife for finer stones.
  • Works great for final edges on rugged outdoor knives.
  • Due to its hardness, it is by far the longest-lasting low grit stone available and will need much less truing than other low grit stones.

That said, always flatten your stone with a truing stone after sharpening.

Sharpening knives can be one of the most satisfying and fun skills to learn and do. Whether you’re an old hand at sharpening, or just starting out, we want to give you a few tips to help you get the most out of your water stones. If you have any questions about care or technique, please feel free to get in touch, our contact information is below.

Waterstone tips:

  • Use plenty of water. Periodically splash your stones with water as you use them to prevent the stone from plugging up with residue.
  • Some stones require soaking in water for about 20 minutes prior to use, others only require a splash of water while sharpening. Knifewear brand stones tell you what they require on the package. A good way to tell which a stone requires is to splash it with water, if the stone immediately sucks up all the water on it, soak it. If it
pools on top don’t soak it.
  • Stones take on steel residue with use. A small Nagura stone can help clean the surface like an eraser.
  • Use a truing stone to keep the stone surface flat. Softer stones might require this before every sharpening session. This will help you to maintain the correct angle for sharpening, which is critical for creating the best knife edge.
  • We suggest lightly beveling the edges of the stone with a truing stone to avoid cutting yourself, and to prevent chips from coming off.
  • In dry climates, certain stones can be vulnerable to cracking if they dry too quickly. To avoid this, wrap these stones in a damp tea towel and allow to dry more slowly. These include the Knifewear 4000 and 8000, as well as the Naniwa Professional series.

Important!

  • Do not keep stones in direct sunlight, extreme heat or cold
(e.g. Inside a car in winter) and avoid dropping them.
  • Always wipe excess water off from the stone before storing.
  • Never ever use oil on a water stone. It will ruin it.
  • Have fun!

So far so good

"I’ve only used it on 4 knives since my purchase and it’s worked exactly as I thought it would. I think I’ll need a lot more time with it before I can speak to its advantages over the cheaper stones."

Sean H. (5/5)

Patrick L. (5/5)

Excellent mid stone

"I was very impressed by this stone. Fast cutter, easy to raise a consistant burr. The feeling is very smooth and the stone gives a great feedback. Highly recommended."

Michel C. (5/5)

A good feeling and fast cutting Mid stone with nice finish

"I thought this stone will be too coarse for me, but it is not. It is one of the best middle stone, even though it is 800, it finishes like 1000. Seems like the Chosera numbering is slightly lower than what they marketed."

Raditya I. (5/5)

Made me a better sharpener

"Works great, nice and flat, splash and go. I have this, and the 3,000 grit from the same line. My knives have never been sharper."

Hey there, we have shipping rates at the checkout, usually it would be $13-17 shipping though to Toronto depending on which location we send it from. That said, we do offer free shipping over $100, so if you add anything to your cart you'll be over $100 and get free shipping. - Ellie
