About Council Tools - Back in 1886, While John Pickett Council was in the turpentine business, he found lacking tools that we of an acceptable standard. As one would do, he decided to forge his own. Over a century later, and the work floor of the Council forge houses over 500 cumulative years of axe and tool making experience. Located still on the Council family plot on Lake Waccamaw, North Carolina; Council forges axes meant for the North American wilderness. Council axes are forged from 5160 steel and handled with American Hickory to create heirloom grade axes that match function and form in equal parts.

    Perfect for camping

"Does what it’s suppose to do. Light enough for the backcountry and excellent for processing wood. Comes sharp and great flat head for hammering tent stakes."

    Christopher C. (5/5)

    Perfect of camping

"Used this hatchet all summer while camping with some friends. Does exactly as advertised and I love the flat end, perfect for hammering in tent stakes. The weight is amazing as well. I often bring this with me in the back country and hardly notice the additional weight. Definitely snag one when I’m stock, they sell out fast!"

Excellent with some room for improvement

"I love this hatchet, but I have a few minor complaints. I found the edge on in-cut into the cheeks of the axe to be too sharp. They were left at a sharp, pronounced 90 degrees (like the spine). Having the spine be ground in this way makes sense to me, but not on the in-cut. I found this to be uncomfortable in my hand in certain choked-up positions, and it seemed to be damaging the strap on the sheath. So I ground it round. The sheath is also too loose fitting on the unit I received. I could replace and move the snap-rivet on the strap to tighten it, but I haven't yet. I would prefer if the head was a just little lighter. Maybe 1.4 lbs. As is, it's still quite a noticeable weight on your belt or in a pack, and I'm not convinced the carving and fire wood prep tasks substantially benefit from the added weight. I would prefer if they had left more material on the handle, especially in the mid section. It's a little too thin for my liking, and while you can easily remove material you cannot add it back. Finally, I did find the price hard to swallow. It's hard for me to understand what costs so much in the production of these tools. That said, I really do like it and I would buy it again."

    For carving and camping tasks

"For carving and camping tasks it’s ideal and best of all the poll is hardened to driving steel pegs etc without axe head damage and the sharpened spine helps facilitate strike rod fire starting all in one package cheers"
